What is 3D Print Bounty?
3D Print Bounty is a peer-to-peer marketplace that connects people who need 3D printing services with experienced printer operators. Unlike traditional 3D printing services like Shapeways or i.materialise where you submit to a company, 3D Print Bounty lets you post your project and receive competitive bids from a community of verified makers. This marketplace model typically offers faster turnaround times, more transparent pricing, and direct communication with your printer operator.
How does 3D Print Bounty differ from other 3D printing marketplaces?
Unlike competitors like MakeXYZ (which focuses on local printing) or 3DGigs (limited marketplace functionality), 3D Print Bounty offers: (1) Escrow-protected payments held until you approve quality, (2) Transparent competitive bidding allowing multiple printers to quote your project, (3) Verified maker ratings system with real project history, (4) Quality assurance process where you review photos before shipping, (5) Built-in messaging for direct communication with your printer, and (6) Integrated shipping with real-time tracking.
Is my payment protected?
Yes. 3D Print Bounty uses an escrow system where your payment is held securely and not released to the printer until you confirm receipt and approve the quality of your print. After a project is completed and shipped, you have 7 days to inspect the print and either approve it or report any issues. Only after you approve (or after the 7-day grace period expires) is the payment released to the printer. This protects you from paying for work that does not meet your expectations.
How much does it cost to use 3D Print Bounty?
The printing and materials cost is determined by the bids you receive from printer operators. 3D Print Bounty charges a 10% platform fee (minimum $2) on the completed transaction to cover payment processing, escrow protection, fraud prevention, and customer support. Shipping is calculated separately and paid when the printer creates your shipping label. This way you only pay actual shipping costs with no markup. For example, if your print costs $50, the platform fee is $5, and you pay both the print cost and platform fee upfront in escrow.
How long does 3D printing take?
Typical turnaround time on 3D Print Bounty is 2-7 days depending on project complexity, printer workload, and your deadline specifications. When you post a project, you can specify your deadline, and printers will bid accordingly. Simple prints might be done in 1-2 days, while complex multi-part assemblies with post-processing might take 5-7 days. Shipping is additional and typically takes 2-10 business days depending on carrier and destination. During the bidding process, printer operators indicate their estimated completion time, so you can choose based on your timeline.
What 3D printing materials are available?
Available materials depend on which printer operators are active and what equipment they have. Most common materials include: FDM plastics (PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU), SLA resins (standard, flexible, tough), Polyjet multi-material options, and specialty materials. When you post your project, you specify material preferences and printer operators submit bids for what they can produce. Check our printer directory to see what materials specific operators work with, or post your project and let the marketplace show you available options.
How do I post a project?
To post a project: (1) Sign up for an account on 3D Print Bounty, (2) Click "Post Your Project" from the homepage, (3) Add a title and detailed description of what you need, (4) Upload your 3D model file (STL, OBJ, 3MF format) or describe your design concept, (5) Specify quantity, preferred material, color, and deadline, (6) Choose between fixed-price or auction bidding, (7) Review and submit. After posting, printer operators will review your project and submit competitive bids within hours. You can then compare bids, review printer ratings, and select the best fit.
What file formats do you accept?
We accept the following 3D model file formats: STL (Stereolithography), OBJ (Wavefront), 3MF (3D Manufacturing Format), and STEP files. These are standard formats compatible with virtually all 3D printers. If you have your design in a different format (CAD files, BLEND, etc.), most can be converted to STL/OBJ using free tools online. If you do not have a design file but have an idea, you can describe it in text and some printer operators may offer design services or be able to work from your description.
How do I know if a printer is reliable?
Each printer operator has a detailed profile showing: (1) Star rating based on completed projects (1-5 stars), (2) Number of projects completed successfully, (3) Review comments from previous customers, (4) Average response time to messages, (5) Equipment they use (printer models, materials supported), (6) Location (for shipping estimates), (7) Certifications or verified maker badges if applicable. We recommend reviewing their reviews, checking their project history, and messaging them with any questions before accepting their bid. Printers with 4.5+ stars and 10+ completed projects are typically highly reliable.
Can I communicate with the printer before accepting their bid?
Yes. Our in-app messaging system allows you to message printer operators directly. You can ask clarifying questions about their bid, request specific techniques, discuss material options, or negotiate details before accepting. This direct communication is one of the key advantages of 3D Print Bounty over traditional services. Most printers respond within hours. After you accept a bid, you can continue messaging about progress, request photos during printing, and coordinate shipping details.
What happens if I am not satisfied with the print quality?
The quality control process protects you: (1) The printer uploads photos of the finished print before shipping, (2) You review the photos and either approve or request revisions, (3) Most projects allow 2 revision rounds at no additional cost, (4) Once approved, the print ships. After delivery, if the print does not match the QC photos or arrives damaged, you have 7 days to open a dispute. You can request a refund or reprint. Our team reviews the evidence (your photos vs. the QC photos provided) and makes a determination on the best resolution.
How does the bidding process work?
When you post a project with auction-style pricing, printer operators submit bids showing their proposed price and cost breakdown (material, printing, labor, shipping). You can see all bids, review each printer's rating and history, and compare proposals. You then accept the bid that best matches your needs in terms of price, timeline, and printer reliability. With fixed-price projects, you specify a price and printers either accept your fixed rate or decline. You can see who has accepted and choose which printer to work with, typically favoring the one with the best rating.
How do I get paid as a printer operator?
As a printer: (1) You browse available projects and submit competitive bids, (2) The buyer accepts your bid, (3) You print the item and upload quality control photos, (4) The buyer approves the photos and you ship the print, (5) The buyer receives and confirms delivery, (6) Funds are released from escrow to your account. Payment happens automatically after the 7-day grace period expires or immediately when the buyer confirms satisfaction. Payments are processed to your bank account or payment method within 2-3 business days after release.
Can I use 3D Print Bounty for both buying and selling?
Yes. Many users on 3D Print Bounty are both requesters (buyers) and printer operators (sellers). You can create a single account and switch between roles. As a requester, post projects and get bids. As a printer operator, browse projects and submit bids. Your rating is combined across both activities, so being an excellent requester (communicating clearly, approving work promptly) helps you as a printer operator too.
Is there a cost to set up a printer profile?
No. Setting up a printer operator profile on 3D Print Bounty is completely free. You only pay a platform fee when you complete a project and earn money. The 10% platform fee is deducted from the amount the buyer pays, ensuring you know exactly what you are earning. For example, if a buyer pays $100 for a print, the platform fee is $10 and you earn $90.
What safety measures does 3D Print Bounty have?
Safety measures include: (1) Escrow payment protection holding funds until quality approval, (2) Verified user profiles with ratings and project history, (3) Secure messaging system (communications are logged), (4) 7-day grace period after delivery to report issues, (5) Dispute resolution team reviewing contested transactions with photo evidence, (6) Account verification to prevent fraud, and (7) Clear terms of service and cancellation policies. While no system is perfect, these measures protect both buyers and sellers from fraud and ensure accountability.
Can I cancel a project or bid?
Yes. As a requester, you can cancel a project before any printer accepts your bid. Once a printer accepts, you can still cancel but may owe compensation if the printer has already begun work. As a printer operator, you can withdraw a bid before the buyer accepts it. After acceptance, withdrawing is considered breach of contract and can harm your rating. Clear communication is important—if something comes up, message the other party as soon as possible to discuss options.
Do you offer local pickup instead of shipping?
Yes. You can negotiate local pickup directly with your printer operator through the messaging system. This is especially useful if you live near the printer. If you arrange local pickup, you would skip the shipping step entirely and pick up directly from the printer. The price would typically be slightly lower than with shipping since there are no carrier fees. This is entirely between you and the printer to arrange.
Can I get a bulk discount for multiple projects?
Possibly. You can negotiate directly with printer operators. Some may offer volume discounts if you are printing the same item multiple times or have a large order. Post your project describing the volume, and let printers bid—they may offer bulk pricing. Alternatively, reach out to individual printer operators who have your specific material/equipment needs and ask about bulk rates.
What if I need my project done very quickly?
When posting your project, specify an aggressive deadline (e.g., 24 hours). Printer operators who have availability and can meet that timeline will bid. You typically pay a premium for rush jobs since the printer needs to prioritize your work. You can also browse the directory of printer operators, identify one nearby or with quick turnaround, and message them directly before posting to confirm they can meet your deadline.
Can 3D Print Bounty help with design or CAD work?
The marketplace itself does not offer design services, but many printer operators offer design/CAD services as an add-on. When posting your project, you can describe what you need designed. Printers interested in design work will indicate this in their bid and provide pricing. You can also message printer operators directly to discuss custom design options before bidding. Some charge hourly for design work, others may include basic design in their project bid.
How is intellectual property handled?
When you submit a design file to a printer operator on 3D Print Bounty, you retain ownership. The printer operator can only use your file to print your specific order. They cannot reproduce, resell, or share your design without permission. Our terms of service protect your intellectual property. If you are concerned about design theft, you can watermark files or include a note specifying usage rights.
Can I request confidentiality for my project?
Yes. You can mark your project as confidential. This prevents other printers from seeing your project details (though they can still bid if you invite them). You can also discuss confidentiality agreements directly with your selected printer operator through messaging. For sensitive projects, you may want to contact specific printers and negotiate a confidentiality clause before they view your files.
What is your return policy?
If your print arrives and you are not satisfied, you have 7 days to report issues. In the dispute resolution process, we assess whether the print matches the quality control photos the printer provided. If the printer misrepresented quality, delivered wrong item, or the print arrived damaged, we typically authorize a refund or reprint. If the print meets the previously approved photos, refunds are not guaranteed but we work toward fair resolution that satisfies both parties.
How long does shipping usually take?
After the printer ships your item, delivery typically takes: USPS Ground (2-10 days depending on distance), UPS Ground (1-5 business days), or FedEx Ground (1-5 business days). Actual time depends on distance and carrier. During checkout, you can see estimated delivery times based on origin, destination, and carrier. You receive tracking updates throughout shipping and can monitor your package in real-time.
Can I track my order?
Yes. Once the printer creates a shipping label and your print is on its way, you receive tracking information in your 3D Print Bounty dashboard. You can click the tracking number to see real-time updates from the carrier (USPS, UPS, or FedEx) showing your package location and estimated delivery date. You also receive automatic email notifications when your package ships and when it is delivered.
What if my package is lost or damaged in transit?
If your package is lost in transit or arrives severely damaged, open a dispute within 7 days of delivery confirmation. Provide photos of the damage and proof of delivery. The carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx) has insurance, and we work with the printer operator and carrier to file a claim. Typically this results in either a refund or a reprint at no cost to you.
Does 3D Print Bounty do any quality inspections?
Our primary quality control is the photo approval system where you review the printer's photos before shipping. However, we do not physically inspect every print at our facility. We rely on the printer operator submitting clear photos and the buyer approving before shipment. This keeps costs down and speeds delivery. If issues arise (quality mismatch vs. photos), our dispute team reviews evidence.
Can I leave feedback for my printer?
Yes. After completing a project, both the requester and printer can leave reviews and ratings (1-5 stars) with written feedback. This builds trust and accountability on the platform. Positive reviews help printers build reputation and receive more projects. Negative reviews motivate quality improvement. Reviews are public and visible on printer profiles.
What happens with my data and files?
Your uploaded files are stored securely on our servers. We use industry-standard encryption and security practices. Files are only accessible to you and the printer operator you select (and your designated printer). We do not share your files publicly or with third parties without permission. You can delete files from your account at any time. For sensitive intellectual property, you can request files be deleted from our servers after the project is complete.
Does 3D Print Bounty accept international orders?
Currently, 3D Print Bounty operates primarily in the United States. Most printer operators are US-based and shipping is optimized for US delivery. Depending on printer location, some international shipping may be possible, but at higher cost and longer delivery times. Check with individual printer operators if you need international service.
How do I contact customer support?
You can contact 3D Print Bounty customer support through: (1) Email: [email protected], (2) In-app messaging (for support-related questions), (3) Contact form on our website. Response times are typically 24 hours for general inquiries and expedited for urgent issues like disputed payments or lost packages.
