The two routes that cost the least money cost the most time. Route 1: Buy the STL and Print It Yourself
Cheapest in cash, most expensive in everything else. If you already own a working printer and have printed something larger than a benchy, this is the right answer and the rest of this article is optional reading.
Before you commit either way, price the filament for the specific file with our 3D print cost calculator. It takes two minutes and it is the fastest way to tell a fair commission bid from a padded one, because material is a known quantity and everything above it is time.
If you do not own a printer, buying one to make a single prop is usually a bad trade. An entry-level machine is $180–350, plus filament, plus the two to four weeks of learning that separates a first print from a wearable one. That is fine if you intend to keep printing. It is an expensive way to get one helmet.
Watch for prop files sold as a single sealed mesh with no pre-split sections. Splitting a helmet into printable parts with clean registration keys is real modelling work, and "the file was one piece" is the most common reason a first prop print never gets started.

Route 2: Use a Library or Makerspace Printer

Route 4: Buy It Finished, or Commission It Finished
A finished prop from an established maker costs $250–800 for a helmet, and a commissioned finished print lands in the same band at $250–600. The difference is fit and specificity: a listing is sized to the seller's pattern, while a commission is sized to your measurements and can use your colour scheme.
Buy finished when the deadline is fixed and close, when the prop is a small part of a larger build you would rather spend your hours on, or when the paint job is genuinely beyond you. Do not buy finished on the assumption that it will be flawless: ask for photographs of the actual item under normal room light, not studio shots, and ask specifically whether layer lines were filled or only primed over.

The Licence Question Nobody Asks Until It Matters
Buying an STL file does not automatically buy you the right to have someone else print it. Patreon, Gumroad, Cults3D and MyMiniFactory do not impose a licence on the models sold through them — each designer writes their own terms, and those range from unrestricted commercial use down to personal use on your own printer only. The only way to know which one you bought is to read the licence text that came with the file.
In practice this rarely blocks a commission, because many designers permit a service printing on behalf of the licence holder and some sell an explicit commercial add-on. What it does mean is that the question has an answer, you can find it in two minutes, and you should send that answer to your maker with the file. Makers who ask about the licence are the ones worth hiring.
Where the prop depicts a character from a film, game or comic, the underlying design is someone else's intellectual property regardless of who modelled the file.
