The Four Measurements That Decide Whether It Fits

Only one dimension has to be exact, and it is the shaft socket. Everything else has millimetres of tolerance.

Material: Nylon or PETG, Never PLA

A recliner handle is a lever loaded in bending and torsion, pulled hard by someone who is not being gentle about it. The design case is a firm yank by an adult who is not thinking about the part, repeated for years, so a good maker sizes the lever root for well more force than the mechanism actually needs to release.

PLA will pass that test on day one and fail it after a few hundred cycles, because it is brittle and notch-sensitive: the fillet at the base of the lever concentrates stress, and PLA cracks rather than yields. PETG is tougher and adequate for most handles. Nylon is the right answer for anything you expect to use daily, and PA6-CF is stiff enough that the printed handle usually beats the original.

Ask for two design details specifically. First, a press-fit steel or brass insert at the shaft socket, so the drive surface is metal against metal. Second, a generous fillet where the lever meets the boss, because almost every original handle fails there and a slightly thicker root costs nothing.

When to give up on the chair

If the steel mechanism itself is bent, if the frame has cracked at a joint, or if the upholstery has failed at the seat deck, the handle is not your problem and a $50 part will not rescue the chair.
